Preparing for your puppy

Your Tutu Cute Doodle is ready to go home!

It’s so exciting! I know you all want to get everything shopped for and organized. Please read through this entire page. I know it is lengthy, but there’s loads of good information on here.

All of our puppies go home with Trupanion Pet insurance FREE for the first 30 days. When our puppies go home, they all have a Health Certificate from our vet. We will only send home healthy puppies. However, until your puppy is fully immunized, they can get sick, and this insurance is protection against large vet bills should they pick up some virus in the first few weeks. We will make sure you get the information on how to register for the insurance prior to taking home your puppy.

Food for your puppy

We feed our dogs and puppies Life’s Abundance Pet Food. Why?

It is a PEA-FREE food. Dogs that are fed a formula with peas have an increased chance of getting DCM. DCM is a heart disease that has had an upsurge in cases. The FDA recommends that to prevent it, a pea-free formula is fed to dogs. If you do decide to switch your puppy t a different formula, please make sure that it is not “grain-free” and doesn’t contain peas or lentils.

Grain allergies are very rare in dogs. A chicken or dairy allergy is far more likely. Dog food can be so overwhelming. There are so many different types and price points. We have done our research, and after having dogs that have literally scratched their off, we are delighted with the results from Life’s Abundance. Another perk is that you can save some money and the hassle of hauling dog food home by using their auto-ship program. Click here to order your puppy food.

You’ll have to order at least 5 days in advance of your puppy coming home.

Treating Puppy diarrhea

It’s unpleasant, but unfortunately very common. Your puppy is stressed having left it’s familiar surroundings, my family, and the mommy dog. Stress and a change in food can cause diarrhea.

A few things you can try:

Stop feeding for 12 hours. A fast should help clear up diarrhea.

A bland diet of chicken and boiled rice. You can even make this in the crockpot. I serve it with this pet pumpkin powder mixed in. Pumpkin is excellent for getting a dog’s digestion back on track.

Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Treats are gentle on the stomach and a good source of fiber.

I feed all my dogs Probiotics daily. It keeps them regular and diarrhea is almost non-existent in our home. Even if you don’t use it daily, I suggest keeping some on hand. Just sprinkle some over the puppy kibble. (You don’t have to use all of the sachet)

Do you recommend a vitamin supplement?

Yes! I can’t begin to tell you the difference it has made to my dog’s coats and their ability to bounce back after giving birth. Nuvet is only sold through vets or breeders. Nuvet is terrific for puppies as it has a full spectrum immune system booster. It’s not just a vitamin, but a blend of amino acids, antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and prebiotics. It’s been proven to strengthen a puppy’s immune system helping keep them disease and virus-free

Ear infections

Ear infections can be quite common in doodles. I suggest keeping a bottle of Zymox  on hand. Zymox has worked for my dogs when antibiotics didn’t! I put a few drops in their ears after a bath and when they’re wet to keep yeast at bay.

Grooming

Doodles need a lot of grooming, but you can cut down trips to the groomers if you stay on top of maintenance by frequent brushing. If you get mats, then use this Magical Comb to remove them.

Frequent brushing with a Slicker Brush will really keep matting and knots at bay.

Burts Bees Tearless Puppy Shampoo and conditioner is the one we use in our puppy nursery. It smells great and is super gentle.

One of my favorite Dog Shampoos is this 4 in one calming pet shampoo.
