A Comprehensive Guide to Successfully Crate Training Your Dog

Did you know that crate training can be a crucial aspect of building a healthy relationship between you and your furry friend?  I want to share the wisdom I gained while tackling the challenge of crate training, along with some random yet interesting facts that have helped me along the way.

First of all, crate training is not just about confining your dog. It is about creating a safe haven for them, a cozy den where they can unwind and feel secure. Unfortunately, for many people, crates may symbolize punishment or confinement when, in reality, they can be incredibly helpful for both dogs and their humans.

Choose the right crate size
This is crucial for your dog’s comfort. The crate should be big enough for your pup to stand up, turn around, and lie down in a natural position. Remember, you’re creating their cozy den, not a jail cell!

Make it comfy
Don’t forget to add a soft bed or blanket inside, turning the crate into an inviting space. Oh, and don’t be alarmed if your pup gets attached to it (like mine did) and starts carrying the blanket everywhere they go!

Establish a positive association
Instead of forcing your dog into the crate, build a positive environment around it. Place treats or their favorite toys inside and encourage them to find them. A simple game like this helped our dogs relax and eventually love their crate!

Gradually increase crate time
Once your pooch is comfortable, increase their time inside the crate. Be sure to provide plenty of breaks for bathroom and playtime! This process requires patience and consistency. Just like the famous saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” remember that successful crate training takes time.

Use mealtime to your advantage
Feeding your dog inside the crate can also foster a positive connection. As they say, the way to a dog’s heart is through their stomach, right?

Since we have implemented these crate training tips into our own home it has changed our household dynamic completely.  When our dogs hear the word “crate,” their ears perk up, and their tails wag excitedly. It’s a beautiful sight that melts my heart every time. Crate training has helped us build trust, and it has become an essential part of our daily routine. As every dog is an individual, the process may look different for each, but with patience, consistency, and love, you too can experience the joys of successful crate training.  Always remember, you’re creating a loving home within your home, a specific spot where your dog can feel protected, comfortable, and at ease. Trust me, it’s well worth the effort!

I take a completely holistic approach to my program. None of my dogs will ever be kept in kennels. They are beloved pets and have forever homes. We take our dogs everywhere, and they are a huge part of the family.

Many thanks!
