Picking the Perfect Doodle for Your Family

As a canine enthusiast and proud doodle owner, I often get asked the million-dollar question: “How do I choose the right type of doodle for my family?” I’m here to guide you through the delightful world of doodles.

First things first: what is a doodle? A doodle is a crossbreed dog obtained by breeding a Poodle with a non-Poodle breed. Their unique features, including low-shedding coats and lively personalities, have taken the world by storm. Popular doodle breeds include Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, and Bernedoodles, just to name a few.
Before you jump straight into a doodle-ship, there are things to consider to choose the right doodle for your family.

Allergies and Shedding Options with Doodles
One of the primary reasons people opt for doodles is their hypoallergenic coats. This is a game-changer for those suffering from pet allergies or those who simply don’t want to spend hours cleaning up dog hair. That being said, not all doodles are created equal when it comes to shedding. Labradoodles, for example, can shed more than Goldendoodles. Thus, doing thorough research on different doodle breeds is essential.

Doodle Size Variations
Doodles come in a variety of sizes, from mini to standard. Your choice should be informed by the available space in your home and the kind of lifestyle you lead. Small apartments may not be ideal for larger doodles like standard Goldendoodles or Bernedoodles, while families with spacious backyards can give these big pups the freedom they need.

Doodle Temperament and Activity Level
What I love about doodles is that they effortlessly fit into various lifestyles. Doodles like the Goldendoodles and Aussiedoodle are energetic and have a zest for life, perfect for active families who enjoy outdoor activities.  Bernedoodles, on the other hand, are more laid-back and make great companions for those seeking a relaxed lifestyle. As with any dog breed, though, individual personalities may vary.

Doodle Grooming Requirements
While doodles are blessed with low-shedding coats, they still need regular grooming to keep them looking and feeling their best. Some doodles have hair that requires more maintenance than others; for example, a curly coat may need more frequent trims compared to a wavy one. Curly coats can be prone to matting if not properly cared for, which is incredibly painful for the dogs.  Be prepared to invest time and effort into their grooming routines, or seek professional help.  Introducing your puppy to brushing early on can turn it into a wonderful bonding experience for parent and pup!

Choosing the right type of doodle for your family is a personal decision that should take into account your living situation, activity level, and grooming preferences. With so many delightful doodles to choose from, I’m confident you’ll soon find the perfect furry companion to shower with love and cuddles. Happy doodle hunting!

I take a completely holistic approach to my program. None of my dogs will ever be kept in kennels. They are beloved pets and have forever homes. We take our dogs everywhere, and they are a huge part of the family.

Many thanks!
